How the Digital SAT works

The SAT is now taken on a computer in the Bluebook app. It has two sections, and each section is split into two modules:

SectionQuestionsTimeScore
Reading and Writing54 (2 modules of 27)64 min (32 + 32)200 to 800
Break10 min
Math44 (2 modules of 22)70 min (35 + 35)200 to 800
Total982 h 14 min + break400 to 1600

The test is adaptive. Your first module in each section is a mix of easy, medium and hard questions. How well you do on it decides your second module: do well and you get a harder second module, which is the only way to reach the top scores. Struggle and you get an easier one, which caps how high you can go. That is why the first module matters more than it feels like it does.

Reading and Writing uses short passages with one question each: vocabulary in context, evidence, inferences, grammar, transitions and rhetorical synthesis. Math covers algebra, advanced math (mostly quadratics, exponentials and polynomials), problem solving and data analysis, and geometry and trigonometry. About a quarter of Math questions have no answer choices and you type the answer yourself.

Digital SAT vs paper SAT

The paper SAT ended for international students in March 2023 and in the US in March 2024. If you study from older paper tests, keep these differences in mind:

  • Shorter. About 2 hours 14 minutes instead of 3 hours, with more time per question.
  • Short passages. One short text per question instead of long passages with 10 or 11 questions each.
  • Calculator everywhere. The old no-calculator Math section is gone, and Desmos is built in.
  • Adaptive modules. The paper test was the same for everyone; the digital one changes after the first module.
  • Faster scores. Results arrive in days, not weeks.

Paper practice still builds skills, but for timing and question style you want digital past papers. That is what every test on this page is.

How SAT scoring works

Your raw score (how many questions you got right) is converted to a scaled score from 200 to 800 per section. The conversion depends on which second module you got, so the same number of correct answers can be worth different scores on different tests. Wrong answers cost nothing, so answer every question.

When you finish a PlaynTest mock you get your scaled score right away. To estimate a score from a test you took somewhere else, use the SAT score calculator.

How to study with SAT past papers

  1. Take a full test under real timing. Both sections, the break, no pausing. A test taken in pieces tells you little about test day.
  2. Review every wrong and every guessed question. Read the explanation, then write down why you missed it: content gap, misread, or ran out of time.
  3. Fix topics, not questions. If three misses are quadratics, drill quadratics in the question bank before the next test.
  4. Learn the calculator. Many Math questions are faster in Desmos than by hand. The Desmos SAT guide shows 21 tricks on real questions.
  5. Repeat about once a week, and take your last full test a week before the exam.

Which past paper to start with

Start with the most recent test dates. They are the closest to what you will see, because the SAT changes a little every year. Right now that is the October 2026 SAT (International). Save a couple of recent tests for the final weeks so you have fresh ones to measure yourself on. PlaynTest has 79 full-length mocks and 9,800+ questions, so you will not run out.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Digital SAT?

2 hours 14 minutes of testing: 64 minutes of Reading and Writing, a 10-minute break, then 70 minutes of Math. That is about 45 minutes shorter than the old paper SAT.

Can I use a calculator on the whole Math section?

Yes. The Digital SAT allows a calculator on every Math question, and Bluebook has the Desmos graphing calculator built in. PlaynTest uses the same Desmos, so you practice with the tool you get on test day.

Is there a penalty for wrong answers?

No. The SAT does not take points off for wrong answers, so never leave a question blank. If you are out of time, guess.

What is the difference between the International and US tests?

On most test dates students in the US and students abroad get different forms of the test. The structure and scoring are identical, the questions are not. Practice with the region you will test in when you can, and use the other one for extra questions.

How many practice tests should I take before the SAT?

For most students, 4 to 6 full tests spread over the last 6 to 8 weeks is enough. Take one, spend at least as long reviewing it as you spent taking it, fix the weak topics in the question bank, then take the next one. Take the last full test about a week before the real exam.

Can I take PlaynTest practice tests for free?

You can start free. Some tests and features are part of PlaynTest Plus, which unlocks every past paper and full explanations until your SAT date.
